Login Problems with Gmail, facebook, itunes account. Need expert help.?

About 2-3 weeks ago I was on gmail just chatting away when my IE8 browser just unexpectedly closed. When I restarted my internet explorer, I was not able to login to gmail, nor facebook.

When I load the gmail login page (after inputting username and pw), I get to the screen that says: “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”

When I try to login to facebook, after inputting my email and pw and clicking login, the website just refreshes as if I just clicked reload. Basically nothing happens.

Another thing is that my Norton System Works Premier also has not been able to login to the server to update my virus list. Also when I am running Itunes, it cannot connect to the server to validate my itunes account.

So the underlying theme here is that I don’t seem to be able to login to any secure websites.

Here’s what I’ve done to try to remedy the problem, but to no avail:
1.) Clearing my cache, history, everything…
2.) Upgrading my Internet Explorer (currently 8.0.6001)
3.) Restarting my computer
4.) Running a full computer virus scan
5.) Tweaking some DNS gateway stuff… but didn’t really know what I was doing, so changed it back to default. It’s worked before on default.

I d/led Firefox and seem to be able to login to the websites through that, but I really want to get this problem solved. HELP!!!

* BTW, I am currently running on Windows XP and last hardware configuration was a new video card (Geforce something). But this happened way after the video card installation.*

I think your best bet at the moment is to do a system restore. Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Pick a time before this problem happened. Also, check the calendars available (bolded) dates and see if you can pinpoint something strange in the calendar that happened the same time that your problem happened.
I honestly can’t give you a remedy other than this, because I am in no way advanced at computers. But I think this would be a good start. And if it happens again, then maybe someone else would have answered your question to help you from there.

note that the problem ISN’T just IE. my itunes and norton system works aren’t able to login to their respective servers as well.

If you are set on using IE. Then what you need to do is remove IE from your computer from the CP. Then once this is done, use Firefox to reinstall IE8.

This will reset your entire Internet browser for IE altogether, no matter what version you download. If the problem persists. Then it is a problem with the browser itself
